JAFAs load SUVs for Taitokerau flight
Taitokerau Border Control says Aucklanders are treating the level four lockdown as an excuse for a holiday – in their rohe.
Coordinator Rueben Taipari says he deployed non-contact checkpoints from Ruakākā to Kaitaia to observe last night’s traffic.
He was shocked and angry at the volume of SUVs laden with boats and bikes.
"They were coming up 400 to 500 vehicles per hour from 5pm until midnight. Even after midnight when there were supposed to be no vehicles on the road there were still 100 vehicles an hour, so we are really disappointed at that attitude, that Auckland didn't stay home," he says.
Mr Taipari says the speed of the lockdown has sparked a sense of panic in Kaitaia, because staples like bread and milk had been sold out.
