Gardiner takes break from Oranga Tamariki clean up


Oranga Tamariki acting chief executive Sir Wira Gardiner has taken time off for health reasons.
Acting deputy chief executive Chappie Te Kani, who has stepped into the role, says Sir Wira and his whānau have asked for privacy.
The 77-year old was asked to stabilise the child protection agency after former chief executive Grainne Moss stepped down on March 1.
He has been addressing capacity in the organisation in light of a number of critical reports, as well as reacting to negative flare ups, such as ordering the closure of a Christchurch care and protection home after a video emerged of a staff member allegedly assaulting rangatahi.
