Crown quits steaming golf course

Ngāti Whakaue has aced one of the world’s hottest golf courses.
The crown has transferred the land under Rotorua’s Arikikapakapa golf course to the Pukeroa Ōruawhata Trust, as representative of its original Ngāti Whakaue owners.
Rotorua Golf Club chair Leith Comer says the land will continue to be leased to the club.
He says it was gifted by the iwi as a recreation reserve, but it makes no sense for the Crown to continue to own the land through the Department of Conservation.
Pukeroa deputy chair David Tapsell says the trust has a memorandum of understanding with the club which will provide better security for both parties and allow for the redesign of the course to take better advantage of the unique geothermal features of the land.
There’s also talk of greenkeeping and course apprenticeships roles and a Ngāti Whakaue golf scholarship.
