Ngati Kahungunu moves to full control of seafood company

It’s the end of an era at Takitimu Seafoods with the departure of manager Marcus D’Esposito.
Ngāti Kahungunu bought Takitimu Seafoods in 2019 from the D’Esposito family’s Hawke’s Bay Seafoods group of companies after Mr Esposito and directors Nino and Joe D’Esposito pleaded guilty to commercial fishing offences.
In a release, the iwi says Mr D’Esposito resigned to pursue other opportunities.
It says he was key in supporting the business through the transition period and it was sad to see him go.
Iwi chief executive, Chrissie Hape says Ngāti Kahungunu had a longstanding relationship with Hawke's Bay Seafoods and the D'Esposito family, who fished its quota and provided pātaka fish for hundreds of whānau tangihanga from Wairoa to Wairarapa.
Iwi chair Ngahiwi Tomoana has indicated the company is trying to establish a partnership with pan-Māori company Moana before the start of the new fishing year on October 1.
