Maori partnership offered in climate mitigation

The Māori Climate Commissioner says New Zealand’s words on climate change are increasingly hollow, and it’s time to take action.
Donna Awatere Huata says the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change highlights the stark reality of the burning planet.
Because of human influence levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are higher than at any time during the last two million years, leading to sea-level rise and increased incidents of flooding, higher temperatures, drought and more frequent ‘fire weather.
That will become increasingly worse without significant international commitment to emissions reduction.
She says Aotearoa can still show genuine leadership through a true partnership where mātauranga Māori is used to restore and renew Aotearoa – bringing new life to waterways, land, flora and fauna.
