Aggressive parents putting schools at risk
A Northland primary school principal says increasing violence is alarming his colleagues.
Pat Newman from Hora Hora School in Whangārei says this week's Principals' Federation conference heard tales not only of pupils attacking their peers and teachers, but also of parents acting aggressively towards teachers.
He says it's a problem that needs to be tackled not just by schools but by parents.
"People have got to realise that schools are supposedly a safe place for kids. If you would not want something happening to your child, why would you do it to someone else. In other words, if you didn't want someone coming on and accosting your child at school, why do you think it's acceptable to do it to somebody else's child," Mr Newman says.
He also considers the legal threats that have become more common in high decile schools to be a form of violence.
