Maori firms to fore in tourism awards
Tekapo’s Dark Sky Project, Rotorua adventure business MDA Experiences and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds have made the shortlist for the He Kai Kei Aku Ringa Māori Award in this year’s New Zealand Tourism Awards.
MDA is also a finalist in the community engagement category.
Other finalists with Māori connections include the Ngāti Koroki Kahukura-backed Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari in central Waikato, Waimangu Volcanic Valley which is jointly owned by Ngāti Rangitihi and Tūhourangi, and Ngāi Tahu’s Dart River Adventures.
Tourism Industry Association chief executive Chris Roberts says the awards attracted a record 150 entries. He says tourism businesses and individuals are keen to showcase how they’ve adapted and innovated over the past year.
The winners will be announced on September 1 after Tourism Summit Aotearoa in Kirikiriroa Hamilton.
