Hospital upgrade makes space for iwi health service

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says an extension to the Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa will help address inequitable health outcomes for Māori in the north.
Ms Ardern and Health Minister Andrew Little were on hand yesterday for a ceremony to bless the site and workers for the new building, which will house outpatients and primary care facilities as well as the expanded renal care and new oncology and haematology services.
She says it means people will be able to get the care they need close to home and close to whānau, rather than travelling to Whangārei or Auckland.
The primary health services will be run by Ngāti Hine Health Trust, which will lease part of the new building from the Northland District Health Board.
