MRI scanning new path for prostate cancer detection
Tāne Māori will be sought for a new project in Tairāwhiti Gisborne aimed at establishing a new prostate cancer diagnostic pathway.
Project leader Daniel Cornfeld says Māori make up approximately 40 percent of the male population in the region, so balanced representation is essential.
Dr Cornfeld, a former associate professor of radiology at the Yale University School of Medicine in the United States, now works as chief radiologist at Gisborne’s public hospital, as well as at the Gisborne-based non-profit medical imaging research and innovation centre Mātai.
Mātai has developed a protocol that bring the time for an MRI prostate cancer scan from 45 minutes to 10 to 15 minutes, meaning more men can be screened and then referred for biopsies if necessary.
