Baby orca gets MP mirimiri
Māori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa Packer has taken a hands on approach to one of her youngest constituents.
She’s donned her extra-thick wetsuit and is assisting the effort to keep alive a stranded baby orca.
Ngāti Toa Rangatira, which is handling the logistics for the effort, put out the call for volunteers to come to the Plimmerton Boating Club, and with her experience of whale strandings in South Taranaki Ms Ngarewa Packer was happy to help.
She’s critical of media reports the orca, which has been named Toa, may have to be euthenised if his pod can’t be found.
She’s putting her faith in marine mammal expert Ingrid Visser and other tohunga on the scene.
"It's really early days and there are a lot of strategies and a lot of effort going into it. Ingrid has socialised infant orca with surrogate mothers and whāngai mothers and things like that. Of course you've always got to have in the back of your mind that this will not end the way everyone wants it to but there is a lot of optimism," Ms Ngarewa Packer says.
