Hauraki Gulf hikoi embraces other struggles
An advocate for protection of the Hauraki Gulf says she wants to build a national network to ensure Māori views of marine protection are given the status they deserve.
Kelly Klink from Aotea Great Barrier says the long and costly battle to stop an increase in the dumping of dredge waste from Auckalnd Harbour in Tikapa Moana revealed how little the voices of mana whenua matter in the planning system.
She says Saturday’s Hikoi mo te Moana in Auckland will include people involved in other occupations and protest actions around the country where the marine environment is under threat of development.
"For the last three years for us at Aotea we were really alone in the mahi and the fight and I vowed then I would do everything I could to try to unite us and that no one would ever have to go to a fight again alone," Ms Klink says.
Hikoi mo te Moana starts from 11am Saturday at Britomart and makes its way up Queen St to Aotea Square.
