Ngati Whatua challenges Dome Valley tip consent
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua has filed an appeal against the resource consent for a mega-dump near Warkworth.
Chief executive Alan Riwaka says Dome Valley landfill would challenge the relationship mana whenua have with their lands, water, waahi tapu and other taonga, and their kaitiakitanga role to protect the awa and whenua.
The appeal will argue the consent does not meet thresholds within the Resource Management Act and the commissioners applied the wrong legal test in taking an “overall broad judgment” approach to the Auckland Unitary Plan.
Mr Riwaka says if the rūnanga cannot get the consents cancelled, it will seek substantial changes to the conditions to recognise that a regional landfill has effects that will last hundreds of years.
