Kiingitanga widens paepae

The Kiingitanga wants to increase the number of people who will speak for King Tuheitia on the marae.
Kiingitanga spokesperson Rahui Papa says the role has grown larger than one person can handle.
He says the current speaker, Brad Totorewa, felt it was time to share the load, and it would also help with succession planning to train up some younger voices.
"There's a need to have a wider pool so you can pick different ones for different kaupapa, the toa takatini sort of philosophy of able tane and able wahine to support at different times and take the pressure off just one person," Mr Papa says.
He says the results of the new policy should be seen by the time of the annual Koroneihana hui.
