Dame Naida dumps on dump enablers

Ngāti Whātua Rūnanga chair Kahurangi Dame Naida Glavish says she’s disgusted with Auckland Council over the approval of a mega-dump by the Dome Valley.
Four independent commissioners voted for the application over the objections of panel chair Sheena Tepania, who cited adverse effects on the environment, both during construction and operation, and the failure of the proposal neglected to recognise and provide for the relationship of mana whenua with their culture and traditions regarding the environment.
Dame Naida vowed to keep fighting.
"That dump is right next to the Hoteo River I grew up in and it runs directly into the Kaipara Harbour I grew up in. How can people who don't even live anywhere near the area in which they've approved the dump agree to it. What sort of people have we got in there?" she says.
Dump opponents are considering an appeal to the Environment Court.
