New subjects floated for NCEA

There are seven new subjects in the proposed Te Marautanga o Aotearoa curriculum and 13 new subjects in the New Zealand Curriculum for NCEA released today.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins says the list is part of the Government’s NCEA Change Programme, and he wants feedback from the education sector, students, their parents, whānau and communities.
The aim is to implement the changes by 2025.
Some proposals that are being tested, like Tourism and Outdoor Education, recognise learning already occurring in schools.
Others, like Applied Mathematics and Science are proposed to provide more choice to schools and strengthen options and pathways for all students.
Mr Hipkins says the changes aim to help students successfully transition from school into further study, training, employment, and importantly life beyond school.
Submissions are open until August 11 and final decisions will be made in September.
