Maori housing strategy set for update

Cabinet has also approved the development of a new Māori Housing Strategy, to replace the He Whare Āhuru He Oranga Tāngata strategy released in 2014.
It will be developed in parallel with the Government Policy Statement on Housing and Urban Development, which went out for consultation today.
Peeni Henare, the Associate Minister for Māori Housing, says the strategy will try to address long-term system requirements and enable more immediate responses to address the housing crisis.
The Māori strategy and the policy statement will be connected through the Māori and Iwi Housing Innovation or MAIHI framework for action.
Housing Minister Megan Woods says while the Government is tackling the the housing crisis it inherited, it also needs to consider future challenges like climate change and population growth.
New Zealand’s population is projected to grow more than a fifth by 2050, by which time the country committed to reducing net emissions of greenhouse gases to zero.
