Kainga Ora impact on communities checked
Auckland University of Technology researchers have been given almost $8 million to evaluate Kāinga Ora’s multibillion dollar urban redevelopment across Aotearoa.
Te Hotonga Hapori (Connecting Communities) will take a three step approach to identify how housing developments can better foster communities and the wellbeing of those who live in them.
Lead researcher Professor Scott Duncan said building houses in the current housing crisis was important but building homes and also fostering communities around them was even more important.
By Māori for Māori solutions would be at the heart of the research.
With housing availability at crisis point Professor Duncan said medium to high density housing was a good option for Māori, although much work was needed on how a Māori flavour would fit into an apartment setting.
