Hapū ready for Marsden Point transition

A Northland hapū is contemplating life without a refinery in its back yard.
Refinery NZ has signalled it intends to cease production of fuel at Marsden Point and turn it into an import-only terminal.
Juliane Chetham from Patuharakeke says the refinery has not always been an ideal neighbour, but in the past decade or so the hapū has developed a strong relationship at an operations level.
She says what’s critical is the company cleans up the site as it transitions to its new use.
"The refeinery is telling us they will be able to clean it up but they only want to clean it up to industrial standard so whatever would happen there in future would also be heavy industry," Ms Chetham says.
