Police team monitoring white supremacists
Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha says Police already has a team monitoring white supremacists.
The Māori Party is calling for Police and the Security Intelligence Service to conduct a joint investigation into anti-Māori hate speech, after what they consider was a too-slow response to an online rant.
A 44-year-old man was yesterday arrested in Tauranga and was charged with making an objectionable publication.
Mr Haumaha says while there were factors affecting that investigation, he’s also looking at the bigger picture.
"I have the responsibility of looking into all these issues around hate crime, white supremacy and we are actively running a team that looks into all of these things and monitors these types of complaints. That's the position Government has funded us for over the next four years, to put together a team that would actively look into these types of investigation," he says.
Wally Haumaha says both Commissioner Andy Coster and himself have offered to brief the Māori Party MPs on the issue.
