Maniapoto marae get facelifts
Maniapoto Māori Trust Board says more than 130 people are now working on marae renovations throughout the rohe.
Chair Keith Ikin says they include whānau who have attended a five-day work readiness wānanga run in partnership with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, covering first aid, health and safety, use of power tools, driver licensing and other workplace issues.
Twenty marae across the rohe received support from the Provincial Development Unit’s Covid recovery fund, and 14 of them have clustered under the board.
Mr Ikin expects all the renovations will be completed by the end of the year.
Taarewaanga Marae chair Tom Roa says the work will not only result in a first-class facility for the hapū and wider community, but it is also boosting future employment prospects for rangatahi who have leaned new skills and deepened their relationships with the pākeke and kaumātua supervising the projects.
