Rugby the winner in Maori funding round
As they say in post-match reviews, rugby was the winner in the latest joint Te Māngai Pāho-New Zealand On Air funding round.
Pango Productions takes almost half the $4 million pūtea for the second series of Match Fit for TV Three, following a team of former All Blacks as they prepare for a grudge match against old foes.
Scottie Douglas Productions gets $1m to make another two 43-minute episodes of Origins for TVNZ, in which Scotty Morrison looks at the latest research around scientific, cultural, and spiritual connections to his whakapapa from Te Moananui a Kiwa and beyond.
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s popular Taringa bilingual podcast gets $250,000 for another 52 episodes.
There are three new projects:
– Faultine Films’ The Drawing Board, which will examine modern Māori architecture;
– Te Imurangi’s documentary on the project to revive Hato Tīpene, St Stephen’s College; and
– He Waka Eke Noa, a six-part series for Radio New Zealand on building a waka taua and the evolution of cultural identity in contemporary Aotearoa.
Te Māngai Pāho chief executive Larry Parr says the collaboration with NZ On Air is proving useful for Māori content creators opportunities they might not otherwise get.
"It gives Māori content creators a chance to work on larger projects with bigger budgets. It's a two way benefit because what we're doing in working with New Zealand On Air like this is helping them deliver on their Rautaki Māori aspirations as well," he says.
