Gisborne court to adopt Te Ao Marama model

Gisborne is to be the second district court after Hamilton to implement the Te Ao Mārama model for dispensing justice.
Chief District Court Judge Heemi Taumaunu says Te Ao Mārama is a solution focused judging approach that draws on best practice used in the district court’s specialist courts.
It involves working closely with iwi, community and government, and aims to infuse tikanga and te reo into mainstream court proceedings.
He says while Hamilton is a larger metropolitan court, Gisborne provides an opportunity for a smaller, regional court to adopt the new approach.
It’s well supported by its local community, with services and agencies willing and available to help ensure that the underlying needs of those affected by the business of the court can be addressed.
