Tairawhiti puts hand up for Maori housing putea

A Māori housing advocate says he can build 500 houses over the next four years based on what’s promised in Budget 2021.
Willie Te Aho says apart from the $350 million for housing, he’s pleased to see $380 million tagged for the infrastructure they will need.
He says Tairāwhiti has drawn up plans for 125 houses a year, based on community need and extensive discussions with housing suppliers.
"That's to ensure we can deliver on any targets we work through with the crown because the last thing is that we get ambitious, we put up numbers we can't supply because we cant get housing product or we can't get the materials or can't get the tradespeople we need to do the job because everyone's busy at the moment, it's a boom in the building industry," he says.
Mr Te Aho says a lot will depend on the criteria drawn by Te Puni Kōkiri and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
