Housing money needed at front line
The Government is flagging a boost for Māori housing in today’s budget and the chair of a South Auckland marae says that money needs to go to the front line.
Hurimoana Dennis from Te Puea Memorial Marae says it is Māori and community providers who are coming up with solutions for homelessness and housing.
"A lot of providers out there, ourselves and others who are delivering services, that would be a good place for some of the money to land – preparing whanau to go into homes, more focused on whānau Māori, Māori efforts and Māori needs, I certainly hope it doesn't get too tied up in layers of bureaucracy before it gets to those who need it. That would be a shame," he says.
