Library encourages puoro playing
Whanganui’s Alexander Library will soon be loaning out traditional Māori instruments.
It’s working with community arts group Awa Puoro ki te Ao to produce kete puoro – a flax kit containing a selection of instruments and two books to help peole get started.
Māori information librarian Jasmin Ratana says the library is pleased to be part of giving access to part of the community’s heritage.
Awa Puoro ki te Ao was formed in 2019 to play and teach ngā taonga puoro.
The kete puoro will be formally handed over to the library next week at a event to start the library’s Puanga Celebrations.
