Innovation wins Ahuwhenua for Ruatoki farm
Tataiwhetu Trust in the Ruatoki Valley south of Whakatāne is this year’s Ahuwhenau Trophy winner for the top Māori dairy farm.
The organic dairy farm produces almost 130,000 kilograms of milk solid from just over 432 kiwi cross cows, milking once a day.
That’s higher than under a previous sharemilking regime when the land carried up to 600 cows being milked twice a day.
Ahuwhenua chair Kingi Smiler says the farm, which brings together the landholdings of six whānau, displayed innovation, hard work and the ability to focus on key strategic objectives.
The other finalists were the slightly smaller Tunapahore B2A Incorporation at Torere, and Pouarua Farms neat Ngatea which is more than 10 times the size.
