New tracks for Mangere Maunga

The Tūpuna Maunga Authority is about to start a five-month redevelopment of tracks on Māngere Mountain, also known as Te Pane o Mataoho and Te Ara Pueru.
Chair Paul Majurey says the main track to the tihi will be rebuilt with a mix of aggregate stone paths, basalt rock steps, and rest areas with seating at key points to take in the views.
He says Māngere was one of the largest and most important pā in Tāmaki Makaurau and is one of the most well-preserved fortifications of its type in the world, with features such a tūāpapa or terraces, shell middens and rua pits still visible.
Informal trails created by grazing stock or visitors, otherwise known as ‘desire lines’, will be blocked off and regrassed.
The authority also plans a major redevelopment of the play park at the base of the maunga.
