Taupo water watch transfer wins praise
Waikato Regional Council’s decision to transfer water quality monitoring functions in the Lake Taupo catchment to the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board has won it the bicultural leadership award from Taituarā, a national organisation for local government professionals.
It’s the first council to transfer functions to an iwi authority, despite the provisions for doing so being in the Resource Management Act for 30 years,
Council chair Russ Rimmington says the award is a testament to how local and iwi authorities can work together to realise a shared goal of protecting the environment, and he urged other local authorities to be bold and share their responsibilities with iwi.
