Professor Sir Mason Durie has been asked to lead a steering group to provide advice on governance arrangements and initial appointments to the board which will oversee the establishment of the Māori Health Authority.

Heath Minister Andrew Little and Associate Minister Peeni Henare say the group will ensure Māori shape a vital element of the future health system.

Mr Little says Tā Mason is a pillar of the New Zealand health system and brings tremendous experience and mana to the role.

He has spent his life working at the forefront of hauora Māori innovation.

The steering group will work to the Transition Unit in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Mr Henare says he hopes to confirm appointments to the interim Māori Health Authority board by September 1.
