Tawharautia principles guide vaccination roll out

The South Island whānau ora commissioning agency has enlisted mātauranga Māori expert Rangi Matamua in its quest to get whānau vaccinated against Covid 19.
Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu chief executive Helen Leahy says Professor Matamua drew on stories of generations of Māori adapting to new circumstances and environments to come up with the concept of tawharautia.
It's around putting in place protections such as a karakia before a journey, or a ritual at the time of a child's birth.
"The types of things which have been done mai rā anō for looking at how we protect our next generation. Sometimes it's about adaptation. Sometimes it's about making sure we have all the information," Ms Leahy says.
The Tawharautia campaign will last eight weeks.
