Manawatū chokes on Māori ward decision

Manawatū District Council has kicked for touch the decision to create Māori wards.
Councillors voted 6-4 to defer the decision until 2023, allowing what it says will be wider community consultation and education.
Council had voted to establish a Māori ward in 2017 but was overturned by a binding referendum.
Yesterday’s decision was opposed by iwi representation group Ngā Manu Tāiko.
