The powerful women of Māori myths and legends feature in a series of digital comic books launched in Tāmaki Makaurau last night.
Author Ramon Te Wake was commissioned by Kiwa Digital director Rhonda Kite to bring the stories of wahine toa like Papatūānuku, Hineahuone, Hine-titama into Hinenuitepō and Mahuika to a new generation.
She says the stories in Aho Wahine focus on the innate strength and mana present within every wahine Māori, and she hopes it will give young Māori role models to look up to.
"To see that they could find their own strength and empower themselves and understand what resilience was, and I think the reversioning of these stories has been my mission to make sure that is what the outcome looks like," she says.
