Maori dairy farmer looks back for future strategies
A finalist for the 2021 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year award wants to encourage more Māori farmers into the industry.
Northland farmer and Māori farm advisor Chevon Horsford is up against Whanganui sharemilker Belinda Price and Ashburton farmer Rebecca Miller.
The Moerewa native says she's inspired by the way her tipuna managed the land in a sustainable way, and believes those principles and techniques can be applied to modern farming, especially on whenua Māori.
"If we were able to capture some of those practices that we can actually still do, that may help mitigate some of these practices for today's generation. Going back to those basics but still being able to operate sustainably, not just financially but for everybody and not just the pūtea," Ms Horsford says.
The winner of the 2021 Dairy Woman of the Year will be announced tonight at a gala dinner in Taupo.
