Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare says just over 8000 Māori have already received the first shot of Covid vaccine, and he expects the number to ramp up quickly in coming weeks.
Mr Henare received his shot yesterday at the Ngāti Toa-operated Ora Toa Takapūwāhia Medical Centre in Porirua, before fronting up for the first time alongside Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield at the Covid Beehive stand up.
He says there are now more than 60 Māori providers working with Ministry of Health to set up vaccine facilities, which should boost confidence in the procedure among Māori.
"I expect the numbers will increase over the next few weeks as we have more of these (clinics) come online. We also have to bring more vaccinators on so as our people are showing up, we have the right facility as well as the right person delivering the vaccine," Mr Henare says.
