Kiingitanga makes presence felt in Orakei High Court action
King Tūheitia has led more than 100 elders into the High Court at Auckland to show the support of the Kiingitanga for the mana of his tūpuna within Tāmaki.
The court is in the middle of a 10-week challenge by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to the crown's treaty settlement cross claims policy.
Ōrākei says the offer by the crown of treaty settlement properties in Parnell to Marutūahu is in breach of its status as mana whenua in the area.
The king’s chief of staff, Ngira Simmonds, says today’s action was not a protest nor an act of anger.
He says for generations Tāmaki has been the home of many different iwi and hapū.
The Kiingitanga respects the mana of all iwi in Tāmaki, and it exists as a vehicle to unite iwi.
While the Kiingitanga and Waikato-Tainui are not parties to the action, affiliated iwi are including Marutūahu, Ngāti Pāoa, Waiōhua and Ngāi Tai.
