Tauira encouraged to study at worlds top universities
College admissions company Crimson Education is encouraging Māori high school students who want to study at the world's top universities to apply for its Te Ara a Kupe Beaton Scholarship.
Up to five tauira will receive up to $20,000 in mentoring and education services to help them apply for the university of their choice.
Past winners include Anais Magner from Aquinas College in Tauranga, who secured a scholarship worth $350,000 to attend the prestigious Mt Holyoke College for women in Massachusetts, and Samuel Taylor, from Mount Maunganui, who after three years of mentoring and tutoring with Crimson, secured a perfect SAT score which led to an offer from Harvard University.
He's back this year as a judge and mentor.
Another judge, Te Whare Hukahuka founder Shay Wright says, says they're looking for students who embody the innovative spirit inherent to Māori people.
"It's named Te Ara Kupe because it harks back to the innovative spirit that flows through our bloodstream so innovation, being bold, courageous, going to new places is an important part of our history and we want to be able to honour that," Mr Wright says.
Nominations close at noon on Sunday April 11.
