Māori seek support to protect taonga against misappropriation

The chair of a group battling to protect Māori intellectual property says tangata whenua rights are certified through their own creation stories.
Victor Goldsmith, chair of the Manuka Charitable Trusts's operating arm Te Pitau, is leading a series of meeting around the country gathering support from Māori to take legal action to stop Australian beekeepers marketing their products as mānuka honey.
Mr Goldsmith says $6 million funded through the Provincial Growth Fund is being used on the group's legal case and certifying their claim of authenticity.
He says Māori are witnessing the bastardisation of their language, whakapapa and business interests.
Māori have a duty to protect their taonga against misappropriation.
