New fund removes barriers to rangatahi sport
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says a new fund will help rangatahi in Te Waipounamu become involved in sport, recreation and community activities.
The $850,000 Te Kīwai Fund launched in Christchurch yesterday will be disbursed by South Island Whānau Ora commissioning agency Te Pūtahitanga in partnership with Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa.
He says there can be barriers to participation by Māori, particularly in deprived areas.
"You're talking about fees, you're talking about uniforms, you're talking about shoes, you're talking about access, so this fund will help in terms of young people's and whānau participation in sport," he says.
Te Kīwai Fund is a two-year pilot which will either be extended or help inform future policy on how to reduce participation barriers for tamariki and rangatahi Māori.
