Time right for dawn raids apology
Green MP Teanau Tuiono says the time is right to issue an apology for the dawn raids.
He says the policy in the 1970s of aggressive tracking down of Pacific overstayers for deportation, including raids by police and immigration on houses early in the morning to catch people before they left for work, leaves a racist stain on the country.
"I was a child at the time so I remember Grey Lynn and Ponsonby when they were Polynesian places, there were Māori and Pacific Islanders that lived there, so we should apologise while that generation is still here and still strong," Mr Tuiono says.
