Gulf Forum turns on dredging

Iwi, fishing, boating and conservation groups have welcomed the Hauraki Gulf Forum adopting a policy to end bottom trawling and scallop dredging in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.
Joe Davis from Ngāti Hei, which has put a rāhui on the eastern side of Coromandel, says there hasn’t been a large wash-up of scallops in more than a decade, pointing to over-fishing of the resource.
New Zealand Sport Fishing Council president Bob Gutsell says the council last year asked members to stop using recreational dredges to harvest scallops.
Several retailers have also stopped selling dredges.
