A Māori media veteran says Police Ten 7 is past its use-by date.
Ella Henry, who lectures in Māori development and media a Auckland University of Technology, is backing the call from Auckland Councilor Efeso Collins for the long-running TVNZ cop show to be axed.
She says the selection of incidents it chooses to highlight paint young Māori and Pacific people as dangerous and criminal.
"It was only a few years ago a CEO of Television New Zealand called Police Ten 7 Māori programming and he didn't last in that job much long after that because the hue and cry for daring to call a programme like that Māori television was seen for what it was at that time and that was well over 10 years ago so is it time for this show and shows like this to be gone? Absolutely," Dr Henry says.
