Centenarian doco a work of love

The 100th birthday of a Ngāti Manu kuia has sparked a documentary reflecting on spirituality and life in Taitokerau.
James & Isey was directed by filmmaker Florian Habicht, whose previous works include cult classic Kaikohe Demolition.
The film explores Aotearoa history through Isey's eyes and the love between mother and son.
James Cross, who has been his mother's caregiver for the past 20 years, says Habicht has uncovered the rich, often quirky, spiritual relationship he and his mum share.
"Florian did such a beautiful job of catching the essence of who we are and what the movie is about because it's about my spirituality, my connection to the realms, You've got to have a spiritual connection to have that balance in life. I don't push it on anyone but without that spiritual connection, who are we really," he says.
James & Isey will be released nationwide on May 6.
