Maori keen on trades training
Almost one in five of the 106,000 people who have signed up for free trades training since July are Māori.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins says a third of Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund learners are in the construction sector with the next most popular areas being primary industries at 18 percent and community support at 17 percent.
Many women are also looking at trades as a career with 7,420 female apprentices, about 13 per cent of all TTAF apprentices.
Mr Hipkins says as a Covid recovery measure TTAF is designed not just for school leavers but for people in a range of circumstances and stages of their lives, and nearly a quarter of tauira are aged 40 and over.
