Four organisations with track records of training rangatahi have received a $5.5 million boost from the Maori Trades and Training Fund.

Social Development and Employment Minister Carmel Sepuloni says it will help up to 150 Māori train and gain qualifications.

The largest investment, $2.6 million, will go to a building trades training scheme run by Tairāwhiti construction company ICONIQ Group.

North Drill Ltd in Te Taitokerau will receive $1.75 million, Minginui Nursery is getting just over $1 million and there’s $180,000 for Gisborne-based Manaia SAFE Forestry School.

Ms Sepuloni says the programmes will not only teach rangatahi new skills but also provide them with pastoral care, guidance, qualifications and confidence to participate in their communities, while also helping build a stronger economy.
