Flotilla highlights threats to Tikapa Moana
Gin palaces lined up to see the America’s Cup races on the weekend were a captive audience for a protest against what could be a future home for many of the big boats.
The Arohatia Te Moana flotilla took to the water with banners calling for people to love the ocean and opposing a 181-berth marina off Waiheke’s Kennedy Point.
Kelly Klink from Protect Aotea says it was a chance for people concerned about the health of the environment throughout the Hauraki Gulf – Tikapa Moana to come together to support Ngāti Pāoa members fighting the development.
"It wasn't about causing any disruption but being present and being visible was key to the flotilla. It was wonderful to see the aroha form those who attended and those present who saw the banners and really enjoyed it so it was a good say out on the water," she says.
