Trash talk and trashy action creating trans Tasman trouble
Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says Australia is creating future problems on both sides of the Tasman with its deportation policy.
The influx of so called 501s has been blamed for an increase in shootings as newly-arrived gang members bring with them a greater willingness to use firearms.
Mr Davis says not all deportees have committed crimes, with some have sent back for other breaches of Australia’s strict visa laws.
He says regardless of the actual crime, many of the people were brought up in Australia and their offending should remain an Australian problem.
Cases such as a woman deported while her children remain in Australia does not bode well for the future.
"What does that mean for her children growing up? What does it mean for their prospects in life now they have this trauma of losing their mother? You are worried now of their prospects as adults and will it create worse problems downstream both in Australia and in New Zealand?" he says.
Kelvin Davis says here was no justification for Australian Border Force Minister Peter Dutton’s comment he was taking out the trash, and he says everyone is entitled to their dignity.
