Colonial thinking hold back Maori housing action
Associate Housing Minister Marama Davidson says a properly resourced Māori strategy is essential for getting on top of New Zealand’s housing and homelessness crisis.
The Greens co-leader spoke at last week’s National Māori Housing conference in Heretaunga and says iwi and Māori community organisations are champing at the bit to increase their involvement in housing.
She says there is no shortage of Māori coming up with visions and plans, but the pūtea has not been forthcoming.
"I know there is general willingness across the housing ministers to break through those barriers and give the support needed but the challenge is to do away with entrenched thinking that is colonial that exists still in agencies and crown that doesn't trust Māori to do better," Ms Davidson says.
