A group supporting Māori staff at Unitec is threatening further action if the chair of the Auckland polytechnic's board doesn't resign.
Te Tira Kapuia is claiming structural racism over the merger with Manukau Institute of Technology which led to the Māori member on Unitec's executive team to lose his job.
The row has led to the resignation of most of Unitec's rūnanga and the removal from the boardroom of a portrait of the late Sir John Tūrei, a Tūhoe kaumatua who was closely associated with the Polytechnic.
Te Tira Kapuia chair Tunuiārangi McLean says he has told both the chair and the chief executive they need to find a solution to the concerns of Māori staff or further action will be taken.
"Te Tira Hou (marae) and by Te Tira Hou I mean Tūhoe will be back at Unitec to uplift a rock with uncle John's memorial on it – it wasn't only the photo. It will be bad for Unitec to get to that position because there is no going back after that," he says.
