National promises Maori ward law repeal
National says it will repeal the Maori wards’ legislation passed by Parliament this week under urgency this week when it is next in Government.
The law removes a provision in the Local Government Act that allows council decisions on Māori representation to be overturned by a referendum that can be forced by just 5 per cent of voters.
Opposition leader Judith Collins says electoral law reform should not be rushed through Parliament under urgency.
She says the way councils are elected is a fundamental part of democracy, and the legislation takes away the ability of New Zealanders to have a voice in this decision making.
