Treaty farm an Ahuwhenua finalist

A massive dairy farm complex near Ngātea bought as part of a collective settlement for Hauraki iwi has made the finals of this year’s Ahuwhenua Trophy.
Pouarua Farms includes 10 farms over 2200 hectares – nine dairy units and one drystock unit.
It’s the largest single dairy platform in the Hauraki region, milking 4,600 cows.
The other finalists are Tātaiwhetu Trust, which runs an organic dairy farm in the Rūātoki Valley south of Whakatāne, and Tunapahore B2A Incorporation, which milks 385 cows on its farm at Hāwai and Tōrere southeast of Ōpōtiki.
Ahuwhenua Trophy committee chair Kingi Smiler says despite the pandemic, farm gate returns for dairy farmers remain solid and consumers world-wide are looking for the high quality, sustainable products that New Zealand and Maori farmers and processing companies produce.
The first field day is at Pouarua Farms on March 25.
The winner will be announced in New Plymouth on 14 May.
